High water in Noordwaard
A quarter of The Netherlands lies below sea level and almost 60% of the country is vulnerable to flooding. So when in the first weeks of 2018, the water levels in the Dutch rivers peaked at 14.65 meters above sea level, measures were taken! Between 2011 and 2015, West 8 worked on one of them: the depoldering of The Noordwaard. This polder was transformed into an open area of 4,450 hectares that can drain water to the sea during periods of high water levels. The drone shots above show the spectacular result.
