West 8 participated in 2019 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism \ Architecture
On the 21st December 2019, the 8th edition of the Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture (UABB) was opened. UABB is co-organized by the two neighbouring and closely interacting cities of China, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Under the main theme ‘Urban Interactions’, this year’s exhibition is organized into two parts: ‘EYES OF THE CITY’, and ‘ASCENDING CITY’.
West 8, together with 18 other world leading figures and design teams, participated in an installation called ‘Future City Matrix’ and was curated by POSITION.
‘Future City Matrix’ is a collection of insightful interview videos and design works in the disciplines of sociology, architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture. The exhibition aims to bring together the authoritative urban scholars’ theoretical expositions with the global designers’ visual imagination of future urban spaces. Other participants of this installation project included, amongst others, Arata Isozaki, UNStudio, Charles Waldheim, Fabio Cavallucci (Chief Curator of 2019 UABB), James Corner, Joan Busquets, Norman Foster, Renzo Piano and MVRDV.
UABB situates itself within the regional context of the rapidly urbanizing Pearl River Delta of Southern China and is concerned with globally common urban issues. Chief curators of 2019 UABB are Carlo Ratti (Professor of Urban Technologies and Planning Director, SENSEable City Lab, MIT), Meng Jianmin (Chinese Academy of Engineering Academician, Chinese Architectural Design Master), and Fabio Cavallucci (art critics and curator). The 8th edition of UABB is hosted at the Futian Railway Station and Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning in Shenzen. The exhibition venue in Hong Kong is located at the 'MILL'.
