West 8 wins International Competition Derbent City Urban District Master Plan

On the 19th November, Consortium NOVAYA Zemlya was announced as the winner of the two stage Open International Competition for the Development of a Master Plan for the Derbent Urban District.

West 8 was acting as a landscape consultant in the Consortium NOVAYA Zemlya and, under the leadership of NOVAYA (RUSSIA), West 8 formed the multidisciplinary consortium together with APRELarchitects (Russia), Groupe Huit (France), Mae Architects (UK) and High School of Economics (Russia) to present the optimum master plan for the City of Derbent urban district.

On the 20th, West 8 Partner, urban designer Martin Biewenga and project leader Inna Tsoraeva took part in the 2nd International Urban Forum 'Designing the Future' in the city of Makhachkala and presented the winning master plan and shared West 8's experience with the delegation. The Forum was hosted by the Government of the Republic of Dagestan, the Dagestan Committee for Architecture and Urban Planning and the Administration of Derbent Urban District.

Implementing the principle scenario of a “Vibrant Town”, this winning scheme included a concept of development for the 12km embankment and a detailed plan for first-stage construction along the 2.5km priority section.

This master plan will help the City of Derbent to determine the direction of socioeconomic and geographic development in the medium term. 

The competition is initiated by the “I Love Derbent” charity fund and organized by CENTER, the Agency for Strategic Development. The two other shortlisted teams included Consortium IND Architects and Consortium the Genplan Institute of Moscow.
